From a member: In a continuing effort to raise awareness, I posted this elsewhere. I lost my son in November. I wanted to share it, just in case my words might help someone. Its up to us. We are all fully aware of the rising suicide rate among our military and veterans. How could anyone not be? Suicide is so rampant, most of us know at least one deceased hero, or at the very least, know of a family who has been affected by this demonic plague. Others of us have been personally affected. The disease they suffered with was invisible, and in most cases, struck without warning. With increasing difficulty, I try to understand. Even being a veteran, I continue to wrestle with the root causes of what has become widely known as PTSD. I’ve seen the disease in action, even when I was not aware I was witnessing it. People occasionally get discharged from the military because of a “failure to adapt,” but what happens to those who make it through their full tour(s), receive their honorable discharge, and are then faced with a “failure to adapt” to the civilian life that follows? Or to those military members who didn’t wait on civilian life to be an option? My question, once again, lies in the root causes. Is the alarming increase in percentages a result of dwindling military benefits? I doubt it. That just serves to piss people off. I know it pisses me off. Is it all the somewhat insincere “thank you for your service, now get a job,” B.S., when they move back home? I doubt that as well. It’s always been that way. Just to go out on a limb. Is it a secret government experiment in mass mind manipulation? Is this theory too far-fetched? Military and veteran suicides are double those of the general populace. More of our active duty and veterans have died at home than on the battlefield, and the greatest number of those, by their own hand. There’s something terribly wrong with that. Wake up America. Question everything! What are we not doing that needs to be done? What is the real root cause of this devastating atrociousness? I have to admit, I don’t know. I am better prepared to recognize warning signals and triggers, through personal experience, but I am no closer to discerning the cause of what is claiming our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends……… It just is, and we as concerned citizens need to get to the dirty bottom of this epidemic. How do we do that? You tell me. And just for the record, this disease cannot be cured by prescribing long term addictive medication. It’s been tried. Repeatedly, I might add. It has to be eliminated at the source.
