From a reader, regarding todays comic: My father actually instituted this rule for my (younger) brother and me. If he caught one of us hitting the other, we were allowed one free retaliatory hit of equal or lesser strength. The other was not allowed to hot back unless we over shot. A few days later my brother hit me, moderately hard. When I hit him back though, I wailed on him with everything I had. The only thing holding back the tears in his eyes was the realization he was about to return the favor. Everybody failed to realize that, being two years older, my ability to hit and tolerate pain were both superior. Thus, I walked away wincing and he was on the verge of tears. The policy was thus abandoned. Epilogue: My father told me afterward that, while he approved of using the system to my advantage, he did not approve when it was *his* system.
