From a recently published article by the noted historian Poggio Bracciolini: Tradition has it that Leonardo da Vinci was so good he only painted approximately fifteen paintings and became bored and went on to other things, those things being the thousands of things in his notebooks, a few of which have come down to us. Forced by the ways of European life, he endured the political, religious, and mercantile verities and personalities, just hoping to die before he had to answer the questions about what he really believed and what he thought of the people around him. He’s just lucky he didn’t have access to social media, where his thoughts could have drifted back to those who funded his activities, and his funding could have dried up because his benefactors actually believed in religion, politics, and banking!
