From a status on an anti-racism page: I want to tell you a story about how casual racism can be. My family and I went to the Black Hills for our vacation in summer 2013, intending to see Mt. Rushmore (which we did). We also found a place 8 miles away, the Crazy Horse Memorial and were struck by the pride of the Native Americans represented there. Fast forward three months to my oldest daughters then-7th grade classroom in our towns Christian school, where the class discussed Rushmore. My daughter-- the only at-least-biracial child in her grade and the only one in her class (including her teacher!) to have ventured further north than Kansas City-- mentioned the Memorial, with pictures on her cell phone to prove shed been there; the teacher declared that she was lying, that there was no such place, and that she was detracting from the majesty of Rushmore by even mentioning Native Americans existing in the same area.
