From a thread on Larken Roses page; I want to share what I wrote: Larken, I challenge your assumption: If you change the rule of self-ownership,and the ownership of property that flows from that, then you destroy all abundance, destroy all cooperation, destroy prosperity, and create perpetual violence. One of the fundamental experiences of life is motherhood, and specifically for mammals, this involves mothers giving up self-ownership to incubate the next generation ; speaking as a mother, I assure you that at times it feels like hosting an alien - and it doesnt end with birth: breastfeeding and caring for our children is by far the best example of how ego-free generosity *creates* abundance. My goal is to give freely of my abundance, never expecting, even resisting the obligation to balance the exchange directly or indirectly. Instead, I frame my desires with juicy intensity and throw them ego-free out to the Universe... sometimes I get exactly what I ordered, sometimes I dont. But I radically accept it all as though my unity conscious self designed this experience for my personal and universal edutainment - and Ive had a blissful rollercoaster ride so far. Insisting on ownership as the primary measure of a relationship is a blind spot of our Western culture, based on our grammar (my book, my house, my wife) and perhaps on the extreme survival conditions white people endured during ice ages. In Africa and other equatorial regions, where many tribes evolved entirely free of urgency around basic survival needs (more than enough food and shelter in equatorial jungles) this absence of scarcity thinking is evident in their language structure, defining relationships as belonging, using or maintaining; where ownership is de-emphasized to the point where children are punished for claiming ownership; where doing the work of another is considered normal social support, your island scenario would be considered bizarre behaviour needing healing. In a world of accelerating hyperabundance, rules based on scarcity dont make sense. We already have hyperabundant information; we are rapidly moving into hyperabundant technology; hyperabundant energy has been suppressed but is emerging anyway; acquaponics-based agriculture combined with permaculture is emerging as the next revolution in food production; equivalent breakthroughs in shelter (giant 3D printing, earthships, cob housing); automisation in all repetitive tasks are rapidly reducing the need for labour... in a world where all our basic needs are met with very little or no obligation to work, how will we fill our time? (And I suggest anyone whos in this conversation is already a long way down this path.) I anticipate a flowering of creativity and culture - more connection via social networks across the whole world, cross-pollinating ideas, solutions, best practices; more time in community, living with tribes of friends, and resolving conflict through mediation and meditation; more time for pleasure, both public, family and intimate; more connection with nature, both as permaculture stewards and to feed our souls... To me violence is a fear-based response to the illusion of scarcity. Look around at nature: abundance is the normal state.
