From an article in the Detroit News sports section....what I have been trying to point out for several years..... Non-winged cars super fast Joe Irwin of Davison runs the Lane Automotive sprint car series which made the stop in Tri-City and also visits several other tracks in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario. Irwin has competed in winged sprints, but prefers non-winged races. So what’s the difference? “Well, 1,200 pounds of downforce that the wing puts on the car makes greater speeds because of the downforce that will hold the car down so you can really just stay on the gas and go faster,” explained Irwin. “I prefer non-winged because it’s more in the driver’s control. It takes more to wheel the car around because you don’t have anything holding the car down. You really have to drive the car around the track and feel the car without the wing. “I’m also a lower-dollar budget team and with the wing and all that downforce you have to have a lot of motor to pull it around the track.” From The Detroit News: detroitnews/article/20130629/SPORTS03/306290019#ixzz2XzafWb8N
