From comments after an article on Heeart.org on the BMJ statin flap. One sincerely wishes that HeartWire were more critical of the imperial attitudes and moneyed interests that characterize the likes of Sir Rory Collins and the other Cholesterol Treatment Trialists who are hell-bent on statinizing the great unwashed. As would be expected, Sir Rory is now pitching a full-blown hissy fit in response to the outcome of the independent panel which discredited and denied his draconian demand that the BMJ formally retract two perfectly valid opinion pieces rather than simply correct/clarify a minor statistical/semantic issue. Clearly, Sir Rory is a spectacularly bad sport and HeartWire has done the public a disservice by handing him a bullhorn here on this website. Thankfully, there are plenty of other sites, especially in the UK, where Sir Rory and his cohort are routinely met with abundant evidence-based skepticism. One could start with the Body of Evidence site authored by medical journalist Jerome Burne. See, for instance, the coverage of todays latest news...Statin Critics Cleared. Top Statin Advocate Knuckles’ Rapped (jeromeburne/2014/08/02/statin-critics-cleared-top-statin-advocate-knuckles-rapped/). NOTE: The report from the external independent review panel of the BMJ emphasizes the fact that BMJ Editor Fiona Goodlee has repeatedly invited Rory Collins to write an article presenting evidence on the benefits and harms of statins. Per Goodlee: “Although your article would be a response to the two articles, and to Abramson et al in particular, it would be helpful if you could use the opportunity to set your piece in the wider context of the evidence on the benefits and harms of statins.” I for one, do not want to hear another word from Sir Rory until he rises to the occasion and accepts this gracious invitation.
