From listening to me speak, you would likely never guess I grew up in the panhandle of Texas. We moved there from Colorado when I was about 7, and I made a conscious decision never to pick up the accent. We had known some Texans who summered in the mountains of Colorado, see, and I found their accents to be hilarious. I knew when I got to Texas, that people from other states were likely laughing inside about their funny way of talking, and I didnt want them laughing at me too. The only time I really sound southern, is when Im angry. Then it is very pronounced. Its funny to see peoples faces when I go from my carefully acquired Metropolitan accent to the high speech of the south... Oh, HAIL NO! Yall gonna make the Texas in me come out. Dont make me go all Peggy Hill up in here.
