From my 2007 comps: "It’s difficult to predict the future. Perhaps a company such as Blizzard or Ensemble will eventually solve the MMORTS dilemma, and convert one of their success story titles into a multi-player version yet. Perhaps the propriety network issue will be overcome by consoles as they become more and more like elaborate dedicated computers while the cost of PCs continue to drop. Perhaps the next “YouTube” is waiting around the corner waiting to stream high quality video somehow overcoming the bandwidth barrier. It is my strong belief that the genre of ARG is the next stage of the gaming evolution. It is a practically untapped marketplace outside of complicated ads for big budget TV shows and movies. It has nearly unlimited growth potential once integrated with other existing online social networks. It taps into emergent properties in a way that traditional video games and RPGs (even MMOs) can not. It works from the inside-out, unlike video games which have limits and constraints built into their outside-in design. It is the tip of a multi-billion dollar industry waiting to be tapped for its full potential because of the potential for ARG to be something real – and no matter how good a virtual world gets it still can’t be real and a time and space shifted virtual embrace can equal the real thing until the network is in literally everything including the content and merely an extension of reality."
