From my friend Sqa Leader Dr Ravi Wankhede Nagpur ••••••••••••••••••••••••MOHAN Foundation is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization started to promote organ donation in 1997 in Chennai by philanthropists and medical professionals led by Dr. Sunil Shroff. The Foundation has offices in Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Nagpur, Bengaluru and USA. MOHAN Foundation was started by a group of like-minded and concerned medical and non-medical professionals committed to increasing the reach of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act. The Government of India passed this act in 1994 to broaden the concept of organ donation and stop commercial dealings in organs, especially kidneys. It is now possible to not only donate one’s eyes, but also other vital organs like the heart, lungs, liver, pancreas and kidneys. MISSION The mission of MOHAN Foundation is to ensure that every Indian who is suffering from end stage organ failure be provided with the gift of life’ through a life-saving organ. MOHAN FOUNDATION, Nagpur Centre was started in June 2013 with Sqn Ldr (Dr) Ravi Wankhede as its Hon’ Director and Centre Head. Two trained Transplant Coordinators are working in the Centre. Between the three over 150 public awareness programs have been conducted in and around Nagpur. Audio-visual presentations are given to cover historical, religious, social, medical aspects of the need and importance of organ donation. Stress is laid on people to accept the relevance of ‘Brain death’ as a permanent and irreversible condition caused by ischemia due to trauma, stroke, tumours, etc. If the organs of such patients are maintained on Ventilator, they could be harvested and transplanted in the needy patients. Such donor can donate eight life saving organs, such as two kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, etc. Besides tissues like eyes, skin, bones, heart valves, etc can also be donated as in naturally dead persons. In the developed world over 90% of the organs are harvested from Brain dead patients. In India it is not over 2%. This is because people are not aware of the subject. If only are made aware, more people would come forward to donate organs. Tamil Nadu initiated mass awareness program in late ninety’s through MOHAN Foundation. This led the State to be a leader in Organ donation from Brain dead patients (now called Deceased Organ Donation). Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka have also stepped up due to efforts of MOHAN Foundation. Other States in the country need to follow in the direction of Tamil Nadu. The importance of the awareness can be gauged from the following facts: • 500,000 people die each year in India because of organs failure. • 10 patients die every day waiting for organs. • India has 150,000 to 200,000 new patients with severe kidney problems every year. ------jeevanjyotibloodbanknagpur.webs/
