From my friend the poet Teri Merlyn. Written when her granddaughter was born, and now sent to Evangeline. And at last, here she is. Tiny, perfect, sleeping, sleeping Inner life evident in expressions flitting across her face How can she have dreams? Are they like dog’s dreams? Filled with sensation? Smells, sounds, light and dark? What does she know? What can she know, yet? She hasn’t been here long for so much cognition Slight smiles, quizzical frowns; an internal conversation So rich and varied, so subtly nuanced Suggests some prior knowledge, experience Perhaps wisdom from a past life permeates? You hope she has; is forewarned, forearmed For this complex, terrifying world she has entered For this now, and only this, is pure innocence Soon, all too soon, she will begin to absorb Contaminations in the environment From which there are no protections She will feel other’s agendas, joys, angers, sadness Radiated by immediate psyches and media proxy Have to learn to negotiate the trials of growing Into this body she now wears with such ease Ah! That we could make it somehow easier So much kinder, for her than it was for us Protect this new human from the hurts and harm We know will await her, no matter what we do All that can be done will be done and she Must learn, as we have learned, grow as we have grown In her own way, into her own person And we will share this journey with her Watch over her, laugh with her, cry when she cries Fortify her with the Great Wall of our Love.
