From my inbox: This year Guyanese are commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Berbice Slave Rebellion when Kofi (known as Cuffy) an enslaved Akan man from West Africa led a successful uprising of more than 2,500 enslaved Africans against the plantation owners in the colony of Berbice. This remains a powerful moment in Guyana’s history. A moment when oppressed people came together to make their voices heard and to bring an end to their suffering. To ensure that this historic event is appropriately commemorated and passed on from generation to generation, the Cuffy 250 Committee of Washington DC and the Ghana Day Committee (Georgetown) are planning a series of events in Guyana and are seeking your support to make these plans a reality. Plans call for a conference in Georgetown and meetings in villages across the country not only to recall this historic event, but also to examine the State of the Black Community today. Through presentations and dialogue, we hope to develop grass-roots programs that focus on improving education, providing entrepreneurial skills training and development, and guidance on land ownership and agribusiness. To convene these seven meetings (Georgetown conference and six village meetings across the country from August through November 2013), we will need to raise $15,000. Your generous support will make this endeavor possible. Kindly make checks payable to Cuffy 250, and mail donations to The Cuffy 250 Committee, 1857 3rd Street, Washington, DC 20001-1887. Sincerely, George B. Abrams Certified Public Accountant
