From my morning devotional: Brothers, have you found our King? There he is, kissing little children and saying they are like God. There he is at table with the head of a fisherman lying on his bosom, and somewhat heavy at heart that even he, the beloved disciple, cannot yet understand him well. The simplest peasant who loves his children and his sheep---a true type of our God beside that monstrosity of a monarch (Creation in Christ, George McDonald). McDonald here refutes the image of God portrayed by theologians of God as a great King on a grand throne. I too have struggled with this image though God is at times portrayed as such in the scripture. However, when we look to Jesus as God we find a character quite different from the distant King ready to strike down any who are disobedient. What we find is one whose heart bleeds to redeem those who are lost and to draw ever closer to those who seek. We find one who desires to be present for those who are weak and hurting. Amen.
