From my personal collection-WTBillySkinner. Great Uncle to Brother John Acai, cousins John and Tom Skinner and I standing in front of the Vaughan, NC railroad depot c.1950. Uncle Bill operated this depot as well as the Littleton depots. I understand me John Vaughan built the depot for his freight shipping needs(he owned three nearby stores)and later gave it to the Raleigh-Gaston RR. The depot was located across the tracks from Horace and Ruby Lee Porters store. At one time the Greenleaf-Johnston Lumber Company and the Fosburg Lumber Company had a small railroad that ran from Vaughan to Hollister. The town was incorporated in 1897 and in 1898 Walter Vaughan became the first Mayor. It is said that during the time of the lumber company business a land company attempted to colonize the area with people from Germany who came to work in the lumber business, but this effort never materialized. At one time the Vaughan area was know as Brownes Turnout. Any corrections or positive supplemental facts are welcome here. Photographer or exact date of image unknown. Enjoy and Share! Stephen/OG
