From my talk with the band today- Magic....Music can be magical. Simply through the combination of sounds, music can conjure up emotions for the performers and listeners alike. Many times, when student music groups perform, the performance is. good enough. Good enough to receive responses of appreciation from those who care about the group. Good enough to make parents smile with pride at what their children have accomplished. Good enough to make teachers and staff members cheer for the achievement of nailing a phrase. Even good enough to receive accolades from members of other bands. But every once and a while, bands find those Magic moments. Those times when the music becomes more than just the notes from the page. Those moments when no matter what connection the audience has to the performers (or even if there is no connection at all), they cannot help but respond emotionally to the music, no - magic being performed. I have been privileged in my experience to be a part of many of these moments, both as a performer, and as a director. Let me tell you, as we head into Christmas Parades, that believe it or not, parades are not my favorite thing. I dont look forward yo the long marches in the cold. Many times with valves freezing as we move along the route behind horses who have left behind special Christmas presents for us to step in. I realize this comes a shock to many of you. ;). But when we can help bring that Holiday magic alive through a truly magical performance, then it truly becomes worth it! When you see the faces of young and old light up with joy because of our performance, that is what makes it special. That is whys makes it Magical.
