From one of my best friends, Harvard historian, Dr. Paul K. Adler weighs in on the war in Israel and Palestine: A commonly-heard refrain about the Israel-Palestine conflict is that the Palestinians are untrustworthy partners for peace because they rely on violence and not civil disobedience in their struggle (ie., why dont the Palestinians act like Gandhi or MLK?) And depressing and horrid as Hamas rocket or suicide attacks are, to pretend theyre the totality of Palestinian resistance is simply wrong. Now we have a story that, horrifically, tragically, might change that narrative as the IDF (by all appearances) today killed a Palestinian Authority government minister, Ziad Abu Ein. His crime: planting olive trees to protest illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Abu Eins perhaps the most prominent person this has happened to, but my understanding is that IDF responses to non-violent protests generally veer towards the repressive. Brings to mind John F. Kennedys admonition: Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable. nytimes/…/palestinian-official-ziad-abu-ein-…
