From one of my new-found friends and whose intellectual depth and insights I truly admire, Prof. Mayo Lopez, Former Dean, AIM: Our fragility in the face of Yolanda was no doubt aided by the graft and corruption that caused the wastage of so much money that resulted in under-investment in the assets and training we needed to meet the disaster; that resulted in the building of infrastructure that could not withstand the fury of the typhoon; that resulted in our not being able to build and manage the kind of knowledge management systems that would have allowed us to make the proper responses to the demands of the situation promptly and fully. Aquino and his team of leaders must address this pernicious issue immediately. If any of the team is found wanting, a resignation is called for and a replacement immediately made with people of known competence and integrity. There has been a momentary failure of leadership in our country. It is a failure we must all share, like it or not; a failure we must rise from; a failure we must learn the right lessons from and implement soonest the lessons learnt, dedicating what we do to those who died because of these failures; and dedicating it to the children whose future we need to build for. Do all these and they will not have died in vain.
