From our Director, Seamus Kealy: We have lost one of the world’s most influential voices in cinema and art. Harun Farocki was once called “the world’s most known, unknown film-maker.” With a career of critical, politically-rigorous films over six decades, Farocki stimulated artists, students and audiences world-wide with his highly engaged and creatively topical style of cinema. As a teacher and an artist, Farocki will also be remembered for his quick wit, his love of humanity, and his kind and gentle manner that welcomed those who wished to meet him, and to chat with him. His later work also involved young and international film-makers – often those without any experience with or access to film-making equipment – which underlined his generosity and his commitment to equality. He will be most remembered for the intense, engaging and complex manner in which he confronted today’s political, technocratic and military apparatuses. His film “History of the World and the Inscription of War” was one of the most important films that I have seen. Having seen it again and again, it has left an indelible mark on my conscience and psyche. Rest in peace, Harun. news.artnet/in-brief/harun-farocki-celebrated-filmmaker-dead-at-70-70455
