From our friends at Gulf World. Big news: On October 25th, Maia gave birth to a very energetic, curious calf. Maia is an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin that was born here 9 years ago and we are glad to see her and her calf doing very well. We are pleased to announce that we decided on a name for this 2 month old calf; her name is Angel. Gulf World chose the name Angel because this calf has a very unique story. After years of experience of observing dolphin births it was noticed during labor that one half of the tail (flukes) was not coming out after a normal period of time. It was then determined that one side of the flukes was lodged in the birthing canal which jeopardizes the health of the calf and the mother. At this time resident veterinarian Dr. Staggs intervened with the birthing process and to our surprise Maia was very willing and cooperative to let us assist with the delivery. An hour after assisting with the delivery, the calf was born. It appeared that the calf had a guardian angel looking over her shoulder thru this whole process. After long discussions of what to name this calf, we thought the name Angel would be appropriate for such a blessing.
