From our friends at OCEAN DEFENDER - Hawaii: TEN THINGS TO DO TO HELP THE OCEAN WHILE YOU ARE DRY 1. REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE ALL PLASTICS. This one should be simple and self explanatory, avoid plastics at all cost! Take your grocery or shopping bag with you, please don’t leave home without it. Don’t buy your children too many plastic toys, they all end up in the trash and a few can be recycled. 2. Save electricity at home and at the office. Reducing your carbon foot print is very important. We use too much fossil fuels to power the world. Unless you are on solar, please save electricity. 3. Save WATER. Water is one of our most precious resources and we must appreciate it and conserve it. The world is going through many changes specially in our climate, please save water. 4. Buy organic local produce as much as possible. Supporting your local organic farmers benefits everyone. You and your family can eat healthy foods while supporting your local economy and reducing your carbon footprint by NOT importing your goods. This is very important. 5. Plant a garden. Save yourself some money and connect with the source that gives us food and life to the planet, our mother earth. You will feel proud of yourself and your pocket will appreciate it as well. 6. Reduce your animal meat intake. Please watch Food Inc and learn about animal farming. 7. Don’t buy bottled water. 8. Use Eco-friendly products for personal hygiene and for cleaning at home and in the office. Take in consideration everything that goes down your drain, either the toilet, the kitchen sink, or the bathroom it all ends up in the ocean so things like bleach and heavy chemicals should not be used. Your tooth paste, soaps, shampoos and conditioners, lotions, make up and everything at home should be earth friendly. 9. Help clean up your local beaches as much as you can. If we all got involved and helped our communities we could see a tremendous improvement in the quality of life of our ocean creatures, together we can make a difference. 10. Make more home cooked meals and snacks for your family. Spending time together strengthen bonds between the family members and can actually save you money. Plan your meals, make them nutritious special and organic.
