From our friends at Twinsburg PD: Please be aware of distraction burglaries. Several northeast Ohio suburbs have experienced burglaries in which a suspect portraying himself as a utility worker has knocked on the door of elderly residents claiming the city was having problems with the water lines and that he needed to check inside the residence. The suspect was persistent and walked into the house against the wishes of the elderly homeowner. He handed the homeowner his cell phone and told the victim to listen to a message from the city as well as advising the victim to contact the city to verify his story. The male was inside the home for 10 to 15 minutes. Although the victim stayed with the suspect the entire time, after the suspect left, the victim noticed closet doors, dresser drawers and a cabinet left open. Nothing was taken. The suspect is described as a white, heavy-set male wearing a tan work shirt with no identifying patches or logos on it. The male did not present any identification. He left in a clean, white cargo van. No accomplice was seen, but the victim reported the suspect was wearing gloves. Please share this with your elderly relatives, friends and neighbors. Utility workers always carry identification and wear clothing that identifies them. Residents should never allow any unidentified persons into their home and should contact the Streetsboro Police Department should an unidentified person attempt to enter their residence.
