From professional chorus to professional soloist – an investigation 3 hour workshop for professional singers with Jenny Miller and accompanist limited to six places per workshop Recently I was one of 3 panelists auditioning singers and after hearing 50 talented artists decided I wanted to give a workshop based on certain points that emerged directly from this experience. Virtually all the singers we heard were artistic, intelligent, musical and good actors to varying and often impressive degrees, and already being employed professionally, but the singers who all three panelists agreed on as excelling had one thing in common: a comfortable relationship between sound and breath. They also presented a sound quality that was both intrinsically and dynamically colourful. Why do I think I can help? I am in a fairly unusual position as a practicing solo singer who became a director and in the process made a strong study of movement, drama and vocal values. I have been developing this study with my own company ‘Barefoot Opera’ and my work is based on continual exploration. Having spent ten years of research with my sister Evelyn Freebury, a movement specialist qualified in Body/Mind Centering (Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen) and Bartenieff/Labann, with my peers on our training course (Penelope Randall Davis, Lesley Anne Sammons and Nicholas Bosworth), and currently with Alexandra Baybutt (Bartenieff/Labann), I am developing a number of exercises that deal directly with the issues I saw and heard before me, as I sat on the panelists’ side of the audition desk. This workshop, limited to a maximum of six singers, will start with group work offering exercises to address the relationship between ease of breath and quality of sound as described above, and will move on to solo presentations with shared problem-solving/exploration, working with an accompanist.
