From senator jim walsh Dear Dara, Thank you for your email outlining your concerns about the cuts to the One Parent Tax Credit. Fianna Fáil opposes these changes. The proposal to limit the One Parent Tax credit to the child’s primary carer is causing considerable anxiety and distress to many lone parents who are already struggling to meet the costs of raising their children.Parents who live apart and share parenting have significant additional costs . The restriction of the one parent tax credit fails to recognise this reality.The measure is designed to save €25m but will cause considerable hardship for many working parents. It makes a mockery of the Government’s claim that they want to support people to secure and retain employment.The measure is very unfair as in many cases the primary carer may not have sufficient income to fully avail of the tax credit and this could result in a loss of up to €48 per week (€2,490 per year). The measure will make it more difficult for a parent who loses the credit to continue to meet maintenance payments. It may also reduce the quality and quantity of time that children are able to spend with both parents. This will impact negatively on children throughout the country.We believe the Minister has not thought through the implications of this proposal and he should not proceed with it.Kind regards, Jim
