From someone (me) who nearly drown as a kid and suffered water - TopicsExpress

From someone (me) who nearly drown as a kid and suffered water panic for years, the sage advice is to do a good warm up so you breathe relaxed at the start. Also, swim your own stroke, swim your own pace. Swim as if you are the only one in the water. In training, practice swimming with only one arm. This is a very tough but effective drill. Get friends together and swim close with contact. In training and races, if you touch a foot in front of you, do not slow down, just move a few inches to the left. If someone touches your feet from the back, DO NOT speed up, it will put you into oxygen debt. It is up to them to move. In smaller races, put yourself into the tight spots to experience the craziness of it and how you can deal with it. Above all, make friends with the water and do lots of intervals so you know how to get your breath back after a tough spot.
