From summer development principle to Sunday Reflection Sunday Reflection 30 Nov 2014 : Let it go The fundamental of rowing - drive and recover - goes beyond just the rowing stroke itself, to how we manage our life balance and approach team issue etc. In the rowing stroke, we would as we retrieve the blade from the water, release the tension on the body and glide (with the least effort possible) up the slide. So the key muscles could recover before the next strokes drive. A more optimised rower commonly can recover in less time and thus be able to rate higher, however they still have to have this recovery period between drives. Whereas for a beginner rower who typically require more time in recovery to be effective, can be further disadvantaged if he/she holds on to the tension when the blades are out of the water. It is understandable as we all try very hard to maintain the balance. Fortunately as we become more proficient, we also become more confident, efficient and optimised. That is in the rowing stroke, what about outside the rowing stroke? First off, life balance. When we are at work, we focus on making our work better. When we are off work, we dont want our mind to work overtime while the body makes dinner, goes to movie or socialises with friends like a walking corpse. We want our mind to recover from work so it can work better the next day! Similarly, when we are at training, we purposefully put all our attention and energy into it. Because we reap what we sow. When training is done, let it go. All the goods and bads. All the gains we would keep for the next training, we dont have to remind ourselves of them again in bed. All the frustrations end as that training session ends. Let it go! Tomorrow/next training is another day. Secondly, team dynamics. The most respectable type of rowers are the generous souls of ladies and gentlemen, who turn into fierce beasts when they get in a rowing boat! But it is not split personalities. They simply let their humbleness and self conciousness of their image go, when they need to work hard and go fast. And they again simply let their competitiveness go when they are sitting in the lounge with their team mates or opponents. Just remember, that opponent who you hates the most, is the one you need to thank the most, for making you so awesome today :D Burn those negative emotions to fuel your drive. But when the drive is over... Let the hate go, let the love and respect flow. youtube/watch?v=YVVTZgwYwVo
