From that time on (after Peter’s confession), Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” Matthew 16:21-23 Just when you thought you were doing well, you went to your supervisor and gave advice on how things should be. Your supervisor probably told you to get back in line. That is what Jesus says to Peter in this passage. Peter tries to tell Jesus how things should be. Peter doesn’t see the big picture. Many times, we don’t see the big picture. We see our own little part. But because we are closest to the action, we think we know best. We are told to get back in line. God tells us to get back in line when we stray from our Christian path. Jesus doesn’t tell Peter to leave, just to straighten up and get things in the right perspective. God doesn’t tell us to get out, God just tells us to straighten up and see things through the proper view. Take some time today and reflect on how you can get back in line with your Christian walk. Set a plan for doing it. Remember, Peter was still the rock, and you are still God’s child. Forgiving God, we give you thanks for guiding us through this life. We confess that there are times that we stray. We ask you to tell us to get back in line when we drift. May we hear you, as Peter heard your son, Jesus. Send the Holy Spirit to us so that we may make the necessary corrections. Amen.
