From the (17/8/13) article: Actor and satirist Barry Humphries has leapt to the defence of the residents of Pitt Street, Redfern, who fear an appeal over a proposed development could destroy the heritage value of their street. Less than two years ago, the residents celebrated a win in the battle against Blackmore Design Groups proposal for a block of 40 apartments on the site of an old warehouse. In the 2012 judgment, it was deemed to be out of line with Pitt Streets historical aesthetics. But Humphries was hugely disappointed to hear about the developers appeal to the Land and Environment Court. When you get the pest control in, the cockroaches go away for quite a while, but then they creep back and developers are exactly the same, he said. They go away, they talk to their expensive lawyers, their friends, their friends on the council even, and are advised to lie low and then pounce once more when everythings gone quiet. ... The most vocal of the Redfern residents is Donna-May Bolinger, the owner of heritage-listed 56 Pitt Street, next door to the proposed development site. Ms Bolinger is afraid that any excavation on the site, which will include an underground car park, risks unsettling the swale foundations of several heritage-listed properties that sit above a water table. The houses on the whole block have already cracked significantly in the past as a result of other developments and we know from experience that its a very dangerous situation, Ms Bolinger said. A report by structural engineer Joseph Natoli, from Dynamic Structural Engineering, said: I believe that the close proximity to the No. 56 Pitt Street represents a very large increase in risk in damage and subsidence to the building structure. The report also warned of a potential domino effect on the neighbouring terraces. ... smh.domain.au/real-estate-news/redfern-residents-fear-developer-destruction-20140816-104hv9.html
