From the Aiken Standard newspaper - Shealy’s bill would create a separate Department of Family Protective Services, which would aim to protect families and children. Also, the bill would redesignate the benefits side of Social Services to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. The same workers at Social Services would manage the welfare, food stamp and other services, but be under the umbrella of Health and Human Services. Other senators should be co-signers for this bill when it’s filed. It’s a step in the right direction, and one that would not just rebrand Social Services, but restructure it in a meaningful way. aikenstandard/article/20141203/AIK02/141209873/1018/AIK02/editorial-social-services-reforms-are-desperately-needed
