From the Broome County website: The first library in Broome County was a subscription library located in Binghamton that began in 1801. Several local residents paid to be allowed to remove materials. The books were located in one of the member’s homes. Notices for the meetings of the library could be found the American Constellation, which was the forerunner of the current Owego newspaper. The library lasted only a few years, while the Broome County Public Library recently celebrated its centennial in 2004.
