From the CKDR Newsroom It appears there wont be any tax increase in Dryden this year. A special council meeting was held today to discuss the tax rate. Mayor Craig Nuttall, Martin MacKinnon, Sid Wintle and Ken Moss all said they wont support a proposed 1.5-percent hike when it comes to a vote next week. Shayne MacKinnon, Brian Collins and Mary Trist all stated that the increase is needed. A zero percent rate will leave the City with a 24-thousand dollar surplus. Staff were calling for the increase because the City has no cash in its reserves and no money to pay for infrastructure projects. Mayor Nuttall says they still havent touched their 7.5-million dollar line of credit. Councillor Shayne MacKinnon fears the decision may compromise future grant applications, while others stress the 214-thousand dollars in extra revenue from a 1.5% hike is badly needed. Councillor Sid Wintle says there are still more areas that can be cut. Wintle says the City should be looking at how it delivers day care as well as look at the Economic Development Office. Councillor Brian Collins says hes not prepared to make any more cuts. The $25.3-million budget is balanced and no official date for approval has been set.
