From the Cat Country newsroom: bit.ly/1wG9ZLn Work on the Alton Natural Gas Storage Project has been brought to a halt. Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell tells our newsroom the company did some work to a dyke along the Shubenacadie River without authorization from the department. He says he hasnt been to the site himself, only seeing pictures, but almost half of the dyke was dug away in one small area. Colwell says there could be a breach if we were to get a combination of a serious rainstorm and high tides. He says theres currently no breach in the dyke, and wants it repaired as soon as possible at the expense of Alton Natural Gas Storage LP. However, the company will not be allowed across Crown land until the department is satisfied that the dyke will be repaired properly. Colwell also says consultations will have to be held with local Mikmaq, explaining that this isnt further work on the project but just repairs to the dyke, though he couldnt offer a time frame on when that will happen. The controversial $100 million project involves drilling into salt formations of three underground caverns and pumping in water from the nearby Shubenacadie River to dissolve the salt so they can store natural gas. The brine would then be slowly pumped back into the river system.
