From the Daily KosHealth insurers are not happy by Joan McCarter Nov 14, 2013 11:18am PST The source of much evil in the health care universe, Americas Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) president and CEO Karen Ignagni, doesnt like President Obamas health insurance cancellation fix. Not one bit. Changing the rules after health plans have already met the requirements of the law could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for consumers, said Americas Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) president and CEO Karen Ignagni in a statement, following Obamas announcement. Premiums have already been set for next year based on an assumption of when consumers will be transitioning to the new marketplace. If now fewer younger and healthier people choose to purchase coverage in the exchange, premiums will increase and there will be fewer choices for consumers, the trade group said. Presumably, that also means Ignagni and AHIP are opposed to the Upton bill in the House, but a search for statements from AHIP on Upton comes up with pretty much nothing. Of course, the Upton bill would also allow health insurers to profit off of their crappy policies with new customers, so thats probably not as much of a problem for them as this totally voluntary new policy in which they would have the choice on extending current plans. Whats really the problem here, since this is totally a voluntary thing insurers could do if they wanted to, is that they have to inform their customers of why the insurance they are trying to get them to enroll in is crappy, and that they could go to the exchange to find something different that they might even get help paying for. That and that if they choose to cancel policies theyre doing so because they want to, not because mean President Obama is making them. Which makes them the bad guy instead of him. The health insurance industry has proven itself nothing if not creative in figuring out how to manipulate policies over the year, which made this whole health insurance reform law necessary in the first place. Theyre just used to doing it to cancel policies instead of uncanceling them.
