From the December 2014 LARGO/MID-PINELLAS CLUB NEWSLETTER an editorial about Judithannes Senate race, written by MARY LOU AMBROSE: Dan Ruth: Great column on the candidacy of Judithanne McLauchlan. I have only one question: Where were you during the campaign? Judithanne was an outstanding candidate. She is brilliant and down-to-earth at the same time. She has a wonderful background in politics. She is a hands-on teacher, expecting more from her students than test results. Judithanne is a mother, a scholar and a pragmatic human being. As you noted, “…she would have been one of the most highly educated, experienced and thoughtful members of the Florida Senate.” Why weren’t you telling readers that before November 4th? It doesn’t do a lot of good now. Jeff Brandes, on the other hand, is rich. That’s it. That is really all he is. If he were a self-made man one could see some value there, but he isn’t. He did not earn any of his millions himself. He inherited all that money. He thinks like someone who has so much money, he simply cannot relate to anyone who is not rich like him. He says the answer to crowded roads is self-driving cars. The fact is that he and the governor are two of the few people in the state who could afford one. He says that Citizens has a right to simply transfer their policy to a no-name company who will possibly double their premium. He berated Judithanne for filing bankruptcy as a student with outrageous medical bills and inadequate medical insurance. As the only Senator keeping medical insurance from those who are struggling with serious illness, Jeff Brandes turned his back on people in the same position, causing good hard-working people here in Florida to file Bankruptcy. It is easy to get medical insurance when you have millions to spend, and that is all Jeff Brandes cares about. His expensive TV ads bore no relation to any truth. He just kept telling the same lies over and over. He refused a debate with Judithanne. Quite frankly, she would have debated circles around him, so he chickened out. So what did he do? He spent money. As a Koch Brothers favorite, he received thousands from all their interests - Hard money (dollars) and Soft money (paid-for ads, etc.). Judithanne worked hard, and raised an amazing $400,000.00, a Herculean task. However, Brandes could have written a check for that amount from his petty cash account. Judithanne was unable to counter the lies and nasty innuendos he spewed across the TV screens. The result? Florida lost. We could have elected a smart, experienced, empathic person who cared about the well-being of those in the district she wanted to represent. Instead, we got more of the same - a grownup spoiled kid who couldn’t care less about those he is supposed to represent.
