From the Deputy Chief of MIssion Kathleen FitzGibbon \ December 24, 2014 This holiday season we can be thankful that we were able to mount a response effort throughout the country that has the capacity to care for those ill with Ebola. The system is constantly being refined as issues crop up. We owe a debt of gratitude to the tireless work of the health care workers, who are helping so many people stricken with Ebola to survive. The focus on Freetown through the surge has resulted in increased efficiency of services in the Western Urban and Rural Areas. For example, more ambulances, a centralized dispatch and decontamination site, and more surveillance officers have decreased the waiting time for transport to a holding center to four hours. More labs mean less time waiting for test results. More treatment and holding centers means there are beds available for those how need them. The surveillance activities continue proceeding smoothly with a steady, but not overwhelming increase in patients being tested and getting treatment. We also need to keep our eye on other districts. During the week, the National Ebola Response Center hosted district coordinators and other local officials to strengthen planning and prioritize resource requests. We are ending the year on a good note in terms of the response. Now, what we need is for families and households to report anyone who is ill, do not hide sick relatives, and do not touch dead bodies or attend secret and illegal burials. Breaking the transmission is up to all of us.
