From the Facebook page SFC Marcus Muralles...Never Forget: This was written yesterday in honor of Veterans Day by Gold Star Mother, Karen Vaughn. She is the mother of fallen Navy SEAL, Aaron Vaughn, KIA 8.6.11 in Afghanistan. Her words yesterday were so beautiful that I had to share them with you. May God forever bless our nations warriors and the families they sometimes must leave behind. Karen writes: While I honor, love, cherish, and respect those who served in wars prior to the Global War on Terror, Id like to ask America to ponder these facts, an excerpt from the last chapter of my book: Less than one half of one percent of our citizenry has served in uniform at any given time over the past thirteen years. Never have so few been willing to bear the true cost of freedom on behalf of so many. And they have done it with unspeakable, unhesitant, unwavering valor. On nine-eleven our homeland was attacked in a vile perpetration of terror unlike anything we had ever witnessed on our shores. But out the ashes rose a brand new generation of warriors, whose voices joined almost simultaneously in an ear-shattering crescendo, “You will pay!” And “So help us God, you will never get away with it again!” The Global War on Terror has now found its way into the annals of history as the longest war America has ever fought; beginning in October, 2001 and continuing strong even as these words leave my mind and hit this page. Astoundingly, there has been no need—in all thirteen years—to enact a draft. This epic battle has been fought by an all-volunteer military, an assemblage of men and women whom I now consider to be…the greatest generation. From the bottom of my heart....Thank you.
