From the Fall 2013 issue of Amherst magazine, “Frost + Nigel Kennedyy” John F. Kennedy went to Amherst on October 26, 1963 for the dedication of the Robert Frost Library and to receive an honorary degree. Here are two excerpts from his speech with implications for the approach to English Language Arts in the Common Core State (sic) Standards: p. 24 “’When power leads men toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.’” p. 25 “’I see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist.’” This was one of the last times that he spoke in public.
