From the Fort Polk Public Affairs Office: Fort Polk seeking career-minded military spouse spokespeople By Abbey Sinclair Fort Polk Guardian staff writer FORT POLK -- Are you a spouse on hiatus from your career but miss the working world? Army Community Service Employment Readiness Program has a solution for you. Fort Polk is searching for five military spouse spokespeople to be the voice of the military spouse in the community. This new opportunity is part of the Military Spouse Employment Initiative, which seeks to improve employment opportunities and experiences for Fort Polk spouses who want to work in rewarding careers. The ideal spokesperson is a seasoned military spouse who is able to make a six-month commitment to the program, most likely for a couple of days out of the week (childcare is available). As this is an important volunteer opportunity, ACS asks that candidates be focused on the mission of the program, rather than viewing it as a means of personal job search. After submitting an application and going through a selection and training process, spokespeople will often work together to go out into the surrounding community. The goal is simple: to both advocate to local employers and agencies about the benefits of hiring military spouses and to gain useful information about employment barriers that both spouses and employers face. Spokespeople will meet with local officials in Vernon and Beauregard Parishes and should be well spoken and diplomatic. We want the local community to understand that military spouses want to work and can bring great skills and knowledge to a job, said Stacey Delgado, Employment Readiness program manager. Even if spouses are only in a position for eight months or a year, many have a strong work ethic and companies can gain valuable experiences from that. Duties/responsibilities - Spokespeople will be expected to: . Communicate with local business owners, officials and chamber of commerce members on employment barriers of military spouses and advantages of hiring them; likewise, discuss employers barriers concerning the hiring of military spouses . Communicate with Fort Polk leadership and the Employment Readiness program manager . Travel frequently Skills/requirements - Candidates must: . Possess a minimum of five years of employment (includes volunteer work) as a military spouse . Have graduated from Levels I, II and III Army Family Team Building . Be diplomatic and a quick thinker to answer questions honestly while still keeping with the Military Spouse Employment Initiative spokesperson policy . Be a good public speaker with excellent communication skills . Understand the military lifestyle and have been stationed at a minimum of three installations . Receive instruction well in addition to working well in a people-oriented environment . Have a reliable means of personal transportation If you fit the description of a viable candidate, stop by the Family Readiness Center, Army Community Service or the Soldier and Family Assistance Center to pick up an application and return it, along with your presume, to the Family Readiness Center by Jan. 31. Call 531-9426 for additional information. #fortpolk
