From the Front Lines ~ In everything that takes place here at the café we always have the idea of how can these gifts go out further into the world. We are cultivating the space for conversations, meetings, and a renewal of civilization/culture in our own time. We are the carvers of our future and when we come together we can find a way that includes a more diverse community than maybe the one we were born into. Our friend Robbie, through his illness and then care at a medical facility, allowed us to come to meet new friends at Cedar Sinai and Beverly Hills Rehabilitation. As Daniel and I worked through the details of his care we came to know the practitioners and the good and not so good that can be met in a system. Our intent was to find a way to really meet every element of this moment with a look too of what new can come forth out of this feeling that there is a system that human beings enter into that feels a bit inhumane to the process of healing and dying. The beauty is that we found the more we show up in humility and also directness new ground, new ways can be found through the heart one to the other. This image we share is that when we enter into caring about one our heart thinking is about how can this, can this, be a new way forward, what relationships can we begin that can serve others as well? We heard from these hospice friends that never before had they taken in one with no insurance and yet there was Robbie being taken in. They also do not take in homeless people, where there is no verifiable address, and yet here was our friend Robbie whose identity could not be legally verified. His identity could only be verified by those whom he loved and who loved him. Such a deeply touching imagination for us as to what is possible for others and this threshold he has walked us to through his illness and then crossing the Threshold. We just received a card from the hospital with a beautiful note and this gives us great hope that indeed we as a little café with our hearts on healing have made new friends that can assist when the moment comes when we shall have to find a space for hospice care or hospitalization and really just humane straight up mattering to another. We are encouraged. We go into the holiday season where Hannukah and Christmas, Holy Nights, are upon us. May we consider how each human being has a light and a gift and an awakening for us to greater care of what is possible in this community, country, and world. Good Thursday dear friends! Note: Dear Dottie and Daniel, It was truly an honor to help care for Mr. Clark and to meet both of you. Your devotion to Mr. Clark was inspiring - you helped him come to a place of peace in a safe and comfortable environment. Thinking of you as you mourn his loss. Sincerely, Jaime G.
