From the Herald: Reported car-jacking in the City this morning. Rutland police are investigating a reported carjacking this morning in the city. Police were called to Vermont Sports & Fitness on Curtis Avenue for a complaint from a man who said his car was taken by an unidentified man he had given a ride to. Police at that scene said they were taking the victim back to the police station for an interview but details outlined briefly at the scene indicated that the man had met the suspect at Tops supermarket in Rutland where he had asked the victim for a ride. The victim told police that he drove the suspect as far the gym on Curtis Avenue at which point the unidentified man withdrew a gun and ordered the victim out of the car. No injuries were reported in that incident. As police were looking for the stolen vehicle, described as a tan four-door Toyota Camery driven by a white man, about 6 feet tall and wearing a red-knit cap, a report came in of a suspicious man dropping a bag in an alley between Pub 42 and Dominos Pizza on Wales Street in Rutland. Several city officers as well as Vermont State Police troopers responded to the scene. Officers, with guns drawn, ordered the man to get down on the ground. The man was carrying a pellet gun but after handcuffing the man he was let go in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity. The man with the pellet gun, Joseph Marro, was shaking and crying after police freed him. He told a reporter after his release that he had entered an alley on Wales Street to urinate when police arrived and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint. I thought they were gonna shoot me, he said. Asked why he was carrying a pellet gun - which from a distance appeared to be a firearm - Marro said he had been threatened recently and was carrying the pellet gun as protection. The Herald will update this story as more information becomes available. Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call 773-1816.
