From the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (paraphrased): Last week, leaders of LOW-ELEVATION ATOLL NATIONS around the Pacific got together in Samoa to raise awareness of their plight: that their islands, nations, and cultures will disappear under the RISING SEA LEVELS predicted with CLIMATE CHANGE. The leaders met with UN Secretary Gen. Ban Ki Moon to plead for more serious global action from larger nations to curb greenhouse gas emissions and hopefully slow climate changes. Low-lying atoll nations are already experiencing flooding and beach erosion due to changing sea levels. Hawaii-based voyaging canoes Hokule‘a and Hikianalia also arrived at the conference as part of their Malama Honua (“Care for the Earth”) worldwide voyage. Sec. Gen. Moon (wearing the light blue hat in photo) got to go for a sail. In Sept., there will be another UN summit on climate change to work on legally binding pacts from UN nations to take more forceful action against climate change. hokulea.staradvertiser/leaders-convene-to-discuss-seas-rise/
