From the Irish Skipper, September 1967, glorious days in Burtonport. SALMON CATCH CELEBRATED Burtonport, in high spirits after its record salmon drifting season which produced 66,412 fish valued at £99,618, held a two-day Salmon Festival last month which attracted the biggest crowds the port has seen. Over 300 salmon steaks were served to guests at the festival, which was formally opened by Patrick Bowles, Secretary of B.I.M. A host of naval events were held, but most excitement was centred around the various boating and water events, some of which were won by fishermen. The race for half-deckers was won by John Ogilsby of Owey island, with Patsy Duffy of Inishfree second. In the four-oared skiff race, the winning team was O. Kavanagh, James Kavanagh, M. Kavanagh, Michael Gallagher and D. Rogers (cox), all of Arranmore, while second place was taken by the Burtonport crew, Liam Duffy, Joe McBride, Tony Gallagher, D. McGee and R. Faughner (cox).
