From the It takes a village to raise a child file: As I look back over my life and try to determine when and where I learned the most valuable lessons, I realize that most werent learned in the classroom. What ever happened to the great storytellers? And I dont mean the Mark Twains or the Brothers Grimm. Most of you probably had one or more in your life along the way, a grandparent,a weird uncle or maybe even just a neighbor. I dont see much sign of their influence on the younger generation today, and it all seems to have been replaced by Hollywood and pop culture. They had a way of expressing things that just made them make sense, but they did it in a way that captured your attention and provoked your interest in what they were saying. They turned something abstract into something real. It is how our nation has taught common sense for nearly two centuries and those who view us from afar are noting its demise. I think its fair to say that the best classroom teachers and even the best ministers have that quality in their speaking. If were going to come up with an alternative to Common Core, lets use some of that common sense and bring back the truly valuable lessons right into the classroom...:-)
