From the MPE Inbox: Space science educational event coming in July If space science is your thing, then head to the 2013 Galaxy Forum on July 27 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. This free program is open to the public, geared for middle school up and includes space-related materials and resources. Presentations Voyager (Are we there yet?)—Learn from Dr. Thomas Armstrong, longtime NASA co-investigator, why many scientists think Voyager I has crossed over into interstellar space and what they are finding. Exploring Space Weather—the Van Allen Storm Probes: How does space weather affect our space- and ground-based technologies? Learn about the newest NASA probe-- which studies the Van Allen Radiation Belt—one of the most hostile regions in Earth’s space environment. Also presented by Dr. Armstrong. From Understanding Basic Particle Physics to exploring the Universe— Learn some basics about particle physics and how new discoveries in that area are helping us understand the Universe and its forces. This includes the first clear evidence for Dark Matter, new understanding of how stars end their lives and neutrino discoveries. Also, the next ultra-large cosmic ray experiment is being developed with regions of the world (including southwest Kansas) being tested to host such an experiment. Presented by Dr. Nick Solomey, Wichita State University. The time is 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27 at the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. Free.
