From the Microelectronics Timeline born this day- Find your place. Charles Townes, 1915 Born July 28 1915 in Greenville, South Carolina. Physicist known for his work on the theory and application of the maser, on which he got the fundamental patent, and other work in quantum electronics connected with both maser and laser devices. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964 with Nikolay Basov (December 14) and Alexander Prokhorov (July 11) for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle. Robert Hooke FRS, 1635 Born July 28 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England. Natural philosopher, architect and polymath whose contributions included early microscope and telescope designs. was perhaps the single greatest experimental scientist of the seventeenth century. His interests knew no bounds, ranging from physics and astronomy, to chemistry, biology, and geology, to architecture and naval technology; he collaborated or corresponded with scientists as diverse as Christian Huygens (April 14), Antony van Leeuwenhoek (October 24), Christopher Wren, Robert Boyle (January 25), and Isaac Newton (January 4). Ugo Fano, 1912 Born July 28 1912 in Turin, Italy. Italian American theoretical physicist who had a major impact in sustained work over six decades on atomic physics and molecular physics, and earlier on radiological physics.
