From the Office of Bay Times columnist and Supervisor David Campos: On Friday, September 12, 2014, David Campos asked Facebook to meet with members of San Francisco’s drag community to discuss a recent crack down on profile names. Local drag personalities including Sister Roma, Heklina, BeBe Sweetbriar, Lady Bear, Anna Conda and others have had their Facebook accounts suspended in the past week until they comply with a policy requiring them to use their “legal name” in their profile. Drag queens have expressed concern that not allowing them to use their stage name is a safety issue as it outs their real names and information. “Facebook may not be aware that for many members of the LGBT community the ability to self-identify is a matter of health and safety. Not allowing drag performers, transgender people and other members of our community to go by their chosen names can result in violence, stalking, violations of privacy and repercussions at work,” stated Supervisor David Campos. “We know that many people who work at Facebook and make these policies live in San Francisco and enjoy the contributions to nightlife made by Sister Roma, Heklina, BeBe Sweetbriar, Lady Bear, Anna Conda and others. We hope that Facebook will meet with members of the community that they are a part of to hear their concerns.” Campos has reached out to Facebook and is working to schedule a meeting at City Hall between Facebook officials and local drag queens as soon as possible.
