From the Potato Letters--70 years ago: Daddy, Somewhere in France writing to Aunt Henrietta, I received a letter from you a few days ago... Thought Maybe I would catch up this evening. This has been one of the nicest days since I have been in Normandy. The natives seem to have nice gardens. So far I havent seen a stalk of corn here nor in England. How I could go for some good roasting ears.... I guess Willis... [has] been seeing a little excitement the past few days. Notice some mention in our paper of their division. Daddys letter was written July 24 and mailed today. The landings on Guam began on July 21st. The paper he refers to was probably the Stars and Stripes. On July 25th just four miles from where Daddys outfit was located, Operation Cobra was begun against the German defenders. It was an attempt to shatter the enemy line so that mobile units like the 4th could exploit a breakthrough. A massive bombing mission was conducted but unfortunately, as the smoke and dust from the leading bombs drifted back toward the Americans, the following planes began to drop their loads on our lines. The result was one of the worst cases of friendly fire of the entire war. Our attackers were thus delayed and the Germans were able to recover and hold their line against our assault.
