From the The St. Louis Post-Dispatch & STLtoday, nearly 45% of St. Louiss chronic homeless are military veterans. Mayor Francis G. Slay, with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development implemented a program conceived by United States Air Force veteran Antoinette Triplett to provide rent, utility assistance and wrap-around services for other needs...Though Wednesday’s initiative is funded for one year, program managers hope the vets will be slowly weaned from assistance as they become self-sufficient. If needed, they’ll be brought into long-term programs. Thanks to Ms. Triplett and caseworkers at NGOs like St. Patrick Center and New Life Evangelistic Center, 50 veterans in St. Louis are off the streets. They slept in beds last night, took a shower, and experienced the simple joy of having lifes basic necessities, many for the first time in a very long time. Welcome home.
