From the WOLLI CREEK COMMITTEE: Dear Members of Committees & Others, A development Application was lodged with Rockdale City Council on 18 December 2013 for the demolition of existing structures and construction of a fourteen (14) storey mixed use development comprising 4 commercial units, 189 residential units and basement car parking for 241 car spaces. The estimated cost of works is stated as $53,996,712. The site is 1-5 Gertrude Street and 10-16 Princes Highway Wolli Creek. The northern boundary adjoins Cahill Park. The link below to the Council’s DA tracking page provides additional details on the proposal. rccweb.rockdale.nsw.gov.au/EPlanning/Pages/XC.Track/SearchApplication.aspx?id=254987 The image above shows the proposed Gertrude Street / Princes Highway frontages. The more recent Development proposals for this site indicate incremental change with every application submitted. Initially a hotel was proposed for the site. It then changed to serviced apartments. A residential building with a number of single room apartments was next. Rockdale City Councillors had warm feelings with the number of single bedroom ‘low cost’ units so the developer amended the plans to provide more even though no one at Council thought to question why the corridors got smaller or what was the intended sale price. With each application the building plans grew by another storey or two. The current application states it is for a 14 storey building however as part of the basement car park is above ground level and as there are structures located above the top floor saying it is 14 storeys is an interesting town planning phrase. The current design includes stylish features to the street and park boundaries. However, as with most proposals submitted to Rockdale City Council expect a few design changes before it is built.
