From the Wall: Peter Bendal Kear requests your knowledge: You all are a fountain of varied knowledge. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about chickens and ducks and know a little about other fowl but I also know my limits. I apologize for what is about to be a long post but I want to give background on my thoughts and then see if they are good or if there is a better option/plan to follow. In order to hopefully get some elderberries growing on the back part of the property behind the pond the wife dumped the slurry of seeds and husks out back there. The hope is just like the ones dumped in the chicken yard/compost area they would voluntarily grow. Well as frequently happens when we go back there (like every time during summer) she got a couple chiggers. It has been decided due to those and well the ticks that behind the pond is off limits till fall/winter when they go dormant and we can clean up and clear out any overgrowth and low hanging branches and implement a control plan The original plan since we moved in was to fence it in back there and release some chickens with perhaps a couple goats but now we are thinking guineas and well no goats. Due to predatory wildlife chickens would not be the best and well from my research guineas have the best likelihood of survival. Thing is we have no real experience with them. We did have 6 of them once but they were roosting on the roof and well a neighbor (who did not live close and has since moved) was scared of them so we sold them. We do know they are will pretty much do what they want unless in a full enclosure which we dont want as they need to roam for bug control. I hear they are fairly self sufficient only needing a little food and water access (the pond) so care should be easy. I also hear they taste good with some folks saying they are better than chicken. Overall we are more worried about bug control specifically ticks and chiggers but should we need to do some population control how they are on the table is also a concern. Anyone have any experience they can share? I have several questions posted this morning. If you cant see them, please come over to the page. Your knowledge is needed today. :D
