From the Whakatane Beacon today: Feather exporter joins mayoral race Posted August 16th, 2013 by Staff & filed under News. WHAKATANE’S seventh mayoral candidate for this year’s local body election has emerged. Landing Road resident Mawera Karetai, 41, says she will contest the mayoralty and seek a councillor role in the October 12 election. “I have a belief the community can be stronger and more focused than it is,” she said. “We’re becoming less family-friendly as a community. We’re the second most violent community in the country.” Miss Karetai, who owns feather export company Feathergirl with her husband Dave Barrett, joins incumbent mayor Tony Bonne, councillors David Dowd and Scott Jarrett, 2010 mayoral contender Julie Jukes and Fiona Wiremu standing for the $99,000 a year job. She said the district needed a stronger and more diverse business community to provide employment that generated jobs and incomes to solve the district’s social ills. “With jobs, money comes into families, which solves a lot of problems through the trickledown effect.” Whakatane needed a community that attracted its young people back home when they were ready to settle down and raise families.
